Abstract
Algiers, this mixed city, which only identifies itself by doubles; an Arabic name, and a French
name, suffered the conjunctures of a political context; tirelessly shaken by cultural and societal
confrontations, over a temporality picked up since the nineteenth century. Conjunctures which
are read in its formal materiality and its urbanity until now, submerged in a continuous cycle of
demolitions and reconstructions. Which, planned or uncontrolled, has the sole result of
transforming and compromising the relationship between man and his environment.
In this research, which aims to contribute to the understanding of the different urban strategies
that took part in the transformation of the city of Algiers during the first decades of French
colonization namely from 1830 to 1870, we first propose an overview of the evolution of the
history of colonial town planning in the fields of urban theory. This evolution is related to the
beginning of a reflexion about the colonial city. Then we will restore, over three key periods,
the formation and transformation of the city of Algiers in colonial situation. which was divided
between military engineering and civil engineering; By studying its political and ideological
context through the administrative organization of its colonial system, and by analyzing its
urban development projects through their planning and implementation
