Abstract
The houses and palaces of the Ottoman era of Algiers are considered to be the jewels of the architectural production of that time. These buildings have a rich decoration that expresses itself through a variety of materials used: earthenware or enamelled ceramics, carved marble, wood carpentry and carved stucco and openwork.
Our research focuses on faience decoration in the palaces architecture of Algiers during the Ottoman era. It sets itself the objective of categorizing this type of setting in order to detect the logic and principles of composition.
The methodological aspect is based on a monographic approach combining documentary research and field investigation. This work is organized around three parts:
• The decor in the palaces architecture of the Ottoman era
- Palaces architecture of Algiers (intramural) at the time Ottoman
- The decor in the palatine architecture of Algiers at the time Ottoman
- The faience decoration in the palaces architecture of Algiers during the Ottoman era
• Case study: faience decor
- Presentation of the case studies
- Appreciation of faience decor - case studies
• Categorization of faience decoration in the palaces of Algiers
- Try to categorize the faience decoration
- Interpretation of the categorization grid
In conclusion, the practical issues of our research would be:
• Participate in the knowledge of Ottoman architecture through the identification of faience decoration in the palaces
•Contribute to the restoration of endangered homes and residences in the Algiers Medina, through the establishment of a manual of restoration of the decor very useful to the PPSMVSS of the Kasbah of Algiers palaces of Algiers.
