Transport urbain et accessibilité aux nouvelles centralités d’Alger

Abstract

Cities are evolving at phenomenal rates, never seen before, and are devoloping following a wide variety of trajectories and forms. These changes affect the daily lives of people living in cities in many ways and on multiple levels, from economy to travel patterns. Indeed, urban sprawl, and the appearance of multiple centers in urban areas, have a considerable influence on the functioning of cities in general, and on urban accessibility in particular. Consequently, research that focuses on the impact that new urban forms, particularly polycentrism, might have on urban accessibility, is highly important, and is attracting increasing interest in both academic and politic circles. For this reason, research that focuses on the impact of new urban forms, particularly polycentrism, on accessibility is of crucial importance, and is attracting increasing interest in both academic and policy circles. Thus, this thesis focuses on the urban changes that are developing in Algiers, and the influence they might have on travel patterns in the capital. This thesis is an empirical research that explores the nature of urban polycentrism in the capital and the impact it might have on urban accessibility, particularly to the centers and centralities. It is an assessment of the transportation system in view of urban metamorphosis, as well as an exploration of future planning options.
