Abstract

The concept of heritage has today expanded considerably, including historic monuments, their surroundings, the remarkable urban complexes and buildings with diversified uses (industrial complexes). Meanwhile, the protection of this heritage has also evolved, it no longer relies on such solutions but on responses adapted to each situation. This is why a good understanding and knowledge of the heritage and its context is essential for a successful intervention. Ranked in the national heritage, the Cherchell museum sits on a site known for its historical and cultural wealth accumulated for several centuries. In this thesis, our study will not attempt to assess the intrinsic heritage value of the National Museum of Cherchell, which is to some extent recognized, , but rather to reveal its extrinsic heritage value by exploring the link established between the museum and the public square of the martyrs (former Roman square), from which our problematic stems: What are the forms of architectural and morphological correlations that exist between the Cherchell museum and its public square ? Therefore, the analysis of morphological and architectural correlations with its public square not only allows us to reveal its participation in the characterization of the place, but also to prioritize protection needs and define measures that control future interventions.
