Abstract

The environmental certification systems for built environment aim at evaluating both buildings and neighborhoods according to environmental and sustainability principles. This assessment allows all players in the construction sector to improve building performances decrease their environmental impact throughout their life cycle and guarantee the users' comfort and health. In order to restrict the environmental impact of constructions, different certification systems have been developed all over the world, however they all have several features in common such as structure, objectives and thematics. This fact has made difficult to obtain a clear view on the whole of certification possibilities. Having said that, to be able to choose between one system and another, the project owners and the investors must know their differences. This research aims at studying some international environmental certification systems, which are well known for their reputation and degree of influence: BREEAM, LEED, HQE
