Abstract
The Moorish Revival architecture is one of the trends of the colonial architecture that
marked the late 19th and early 20th century. Its prestigious and emblematic
monuments mark the urban landscape today.
Heritage residential buildings neo Moorish Algiers is considerable but was not
explored. The New residential Moorish architecture therefore requires the
establishment of a directory of these buildings as well as the determination of their
situation in order to grasp its importance.
This research aims to understand the origin of neo Moorish applied to the Algiers
apartment building. The subject research the origin of the adoption of the neo -
Moorish fashion in residential architecture that is not unrelated to the British presence
in Algiers. These British colonists have restored country houses from the Ottoman
period and other villas had been built in the same style to suit their needs and
requirements, would be responsible of the emergence of neo -Moorish style in
residential architecture Algiers.
This study allowsalsocapturing the demonstration of style, its variants and
interpretations in the residential building in Algiers. Is it a fundamental interpretation
of Moorish architecture in tenements or a fragment architecture that takes quotes
from the Moorish decorative elements directory? There is also question of the study
reports correlation of syncretism between local forms of organization of the
residential architecture of obedience and those induced by the model of
the metropolitan building Haussmann-style report.
The neo -Moorish residential properties in Algiers is important, rich and have varied
expressions. Its exploration has required an inventory of buildings neo Moorish report

thirty buildings located in a scattered manner in the direction of development of the

dwellings.

buildings on which an exhaustive study has been made. It has identified the aspects
of distribution and spatial organization of buildings, facades expression through their
composition as well as architectural and decorative elements which allowed detecting
a typology of buildings.
